Legend of the Galiwgiwon


Years passed and the trees have grown.  Still the mother continued his regular trip up the mountain.  And one day, she spotted a monitor lizard resting at the foot of the last tree.  The creature did not move even as she came near it as if it wants her to cradle it.  Then suddenly there was some movement of several other lizards around as if ready to attack her.  Then the lizard at the foot of the tree moved away and soon all lizards went away in the same direction.

She told the story when she went back home.  A mumbaki said that lizard she saw at the foot of the tree must be Giwon.  Upon hearing this, she continued her trips up the mountain but she never saw anymore any lizard.  Age soon caught up with her and so with her husband that no one among them had ever went up the mountain again.  The eldest child on the other hand never went up, always talking through that he would not like to be snatched by giants just like what happened to Giwon.  Now the youngest saw the sadness in his mother’s face of not seeing his brother.  He then took the challenge of going up

He went and saw no lizard.  He was determined to catch the lizard so he built a small hut near the foot of the tree where he expected the lizard to come, if it were Giwon.  But no lizard ever came.  Soon, it observed that the tree has flowered.  Then the flowers became tiny green fruits.  But still there was no sign of a lizard.  Then some ripened to orange and purple.  Still there was no sign of a lizard.  So he decided to gather the ripe ones and went back home.  He observed along the way that some of the other trees did not bear fruit and some are still flowering.  When he reached home, his mother tasted the fruits and she said, indeed they tasted the same as those juice his son Giwon brought home.  Soon, the fruits of the tree at the yard also yielded fruit.  Neighbors have heard about it and they came to see the new fruit.  When they asked what’s the name of the fruit, the mother says that must be “Galiw Giwon” (Galiw of Giwon).
 
The youngest brother believed that if indeed this were Giwon’s, he must be really up there the mountain.  He informed his parent that he loves to live where he built the hut hoping to one day see his brother.  With a heavy heart, the parents said yes.  One day he saw a man resting under it.  Surprisingly however, there was no one around when he came near it except a monitor lizard trying to run away.  He called out the name Giwon and the lizard stopped.  The lizard became human and they introduced themselves to each other.  The youngest brother told how their mother missed him.  But Giwon told him he cannot do anything because he has been married to a creature of Banago and would never go back to his old home again.  The younger brother asked about the new tree.  Giwon said it was not the real Galiw but was just the bait for wild chickens in Banago.   He told the truth about how their eldest brother stole those seeds and how the creatures of Banago captured him in exchange of the stolen seeds.  Giwon however revealed that soon the creatures of Banago forgave and forgot the thievery as more birds came into their place when the tree which by accident have spread to the land bore fruits and even multiplied.

When the youngest brother came down, he confronted their eldest brother about how he hid the true story.  The eldest explained it was all because of fear that their mother might hate him forever if she knew what he has done to Giwon.  Their mother heard their conversation, did not say a thing and just embraced her two sons.

The next year, the trees bore fruit again.  It was sweeter than their first fruits.  Perhaps it was because they learned to forgive whatever wrong that may have been done in the past, the mother explained.  They continued to call it the Galiw of Giwon in remembrance of the son.

Because of the sweetness, people craved for more and scaled the mountains for it.  The birds do love it too and soon has spread to wherever birds fly. To this day, the fruit is called Galiwgiwon and when fruiting season comes, people go up mountains and forests for its fruits.
